The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) are two of the most popular competitive exams in India for government jobs. While the UPSC conducts the prestigious Civil Services Exam (CSE) for recruitment into the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and other All India Services, the SSC holds exams like SSC CGL for Group B and Group C non-gazetted posts.

What is SSC CGL?

The SSC CGL exam consists of four stages — Tier I, Tier II, Tier III and Tier IV. Tier I is an objective multiple choice exam testing candidates on General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Comprehension.

Candidates who clear Tier I then appear for Tier II which comprises objective Multiple Choice Questions on Quantitative Abilities, English Language and Comprehension, Statistics and General Studies.

The Tier III exam is a descriptive paper in English/Hindi testing the writing skills of candidates. Finally, Tier IV is a computer proficiency test and data entry skill test.

What is UPSC Civil Services Exam?

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the prestigious Civil Services Examination (CSE) every year for recruitment to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and other civil services.

The exam consists of three stages — Prelims, Mains and Personality Test. The Prelims is an objective MCQ-based paper testing candidates on General Studies and Aptitude. Candidates who qualify Prelims then appear for the Mains exam which has 9 descriptive papers testing candidates on subjects like Essay, General Studies, Optional Subjects and English.

Finally, shortlisted candidates are called for the Personality Test which is an interview round conducted by the UPSC panel.

Pros of SSC CGL:

  • Less competition than UPSC — around 15–20 lakh candidates appear for SSC CGL compared to nearly 7 lakh for UPSC.
  • Lower age limit is 18 years versus 21 years for UPSC.
  • No upper age limit for Group C posts.
